MUMBAI: A rule in the brochure released by the central medical counselling committee (MCC) asking students to forfeit their deposits ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 2 lakh for an upgrade from round two to round three has not gone down well with postgraduate aspirants.

Last year, students were not given the option of upgrading from round two to three. This year, though they can upgrade based on merit, forfeiting the deposit may act as a deterrent for many. The candidates deposit Rs 25,000 for government colleges and Rs 2 lakh for deemed colleges before the first round.

Parents and candidates pointed out in the MBBS process this year, they could seek free upgrade to the third round.

The rules state: “Candidates allotted a seat in round 2 can opt for willingness to upgrade from round 2 to round 3, for which they have to physically report at the round 2 allotted college. After fulfilling admission formalities, they can opt for willingness and have to forfeit security deposit. Also do fresh registration with payment of fees.”

A health ministry official, however, said there is a free upgrade if the student is in the MCC system. In case of an exit, the amount will be forfeited. “If there is any confusion, a necessary clarification will be issued,” said the official.

Parent representative Sudha Shenoy said a clarification was issued by the MCC during the UG admissions, but it hasn’t come for PG. Muzaffar Khan, a counsellor, said there has been confusion and the MCC should help resolve the issue.
