Mumbai: The
Indian Coast Guard, on Tuesday morning, carried out the
medical evacuation
of a 24-year-old
seaman
from
Tamil Nadu who had fractured his right hand while working onboard
Panama-flag ship MV Silver Star
that was anchored off
Revdanda
, a few kms away from Mumbai.
The captain of MV Silver Star sent a request late on Monday to the
Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre
(MRCC-Mumbai) for evacuation of the injured seaman, Patrick Kennedy. MRCC-Mumbai coordinated with the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) station at Murud, Janjira, and evacuated him at 11.45am on Tuesday, after completing the procedures of disembarkation.
Kennedy is undergoing treatment at Nair hospital.
The Panama flag ship has been anchored off Revdanda and was discharging coal when Kennedy, who was working with a hammer, seriously injured his hand on Monday. “When the master of the foreign merchant ship failed in getting help from passing vessels to evacuate the cadet, he finally called the MRCC-Mumbai for medical evacuation. The evacuation was carried out on Tuesday, and Kennedy was brought to our Murud-Janjira station from where he was taken in an ambulance to hospital by afternoon,” the ICG spokesperson told
TOI. “Under normal circumstances, seamen are not permitted to disembark or to join the ship at this anchorage, as it is not a designated immigration outpost. Considering the gravity of the situation and requirement to evacuate the patient, the captain requested the MRCC-Mumbai for medical evacuation.”
This is the second medical evacuation the ICG has carried out in the last two weeks. On April 6, ICG ship Agrim did medical evacuation of fourth engineer Binood Kumar (34) onboard Shipping Corporation of India’s MV Goa after getting a distress call from the captain. Kumar was profusely bleeding from ear and hand and had first degree burns on the right wrist as he got struck in pantry bulkhead, about 22 nautical miles north-west off Mumbai shore.
