MUMBAI: For the third time in eight days, BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan was wheeled into the operation theatre at Hinduja Hospital on Saturday. This time, his abdominal cavity was cleaned up and two tubes-one for breathing and the other for liquid nutrition-were fixed. "He is still critical, but his liver wound appears contained and his sutures are fine,"said Dr G B Daver, who headed the Hinduja team of doctors that operated on the BJP leader.
The doctors, however, have a new reason to worry-necrosis, or tissues that are dying at the head of the pancreas due to the leakage of corrosive pancreatic juices.
Saturday's clean-up was literally meant to clear the bacteria present. "He may need more such procedures in the coming days,"said Dr V Chandiramani, who was a part of the team along with the Mahajan family's special invitee doctors from London-liver transplant surgeon Mohammed Rela and liver specialist Julia Wendon. On Saturday, the usual cavalcade of visitors was absent as Mahajan was operated on at about 10 am. The procedure involved the clean-up, a tracheostomy (a tube inserted into his trachea for better and safer connection to the ventilator) and a jejunostomy (tube inserted into the jejunum or a part of the small intestine to introduce protein\fat\starch in a liquid form).
"Earlier his ventilation tubes were through the mouth. But ventilation through the windpipe provides more comfort to the patient in the long run, besides reducing the risk of infection,"said a doctor. Compared to the earlier two surgeries, Saturday's procedure saw fewer worried faces outside the Mahim hospital. BJP spokesperson Vinod Tawde mingled with party workers and mediapersons, reassuring them that the operation was "minor"and there was "no reason to worry". At about 3 pm, the day's first VIP visitor, Gujarat CM Narendra Modi. His exit was followed by hospital director Anupam Verma's arrival for a press briefing. "Mahajan has undergone a planned procedure and has tolerated the procedure well,"he said.
