mumbai: the acharya vishwanath dev sharma art foundation has organised a classical music and dance competition to encourage young talent and to promote indian classical arts in the west. the competition will be held on december 21 in the memory of acharya vishwanath dev sharma of the viswa jyotirvid samagh. the foundation is a part of the vedic heritage inc, new york, instituted by maa jyotishanand saraswati.
addressing reporters in mumbai on wednesday, noted classical singer pandit jasraj said the competition would encourage young musicians and performers. ``the only incentive for artistes of my generation was a chance to sing on all indian radio. but these days, there is so much incentive in the form of scholarships and corporate partnerships,'' he noted. the competitions will be held in three categories __ vocal, instrumental and dance __ on at vallabh vidyalaya, sion, and the final competition will be held at new york. six finalists will get a chance to perform with maestros of classical music at concerts at new york, which the foundation hosts from time to time.
