MUMBAI: With only eight days left for the first monsoon month to end, the city has so far received just 5%—17. 9mm—of the required 342. 1mm rainfall for June. The average June rain stands at 526. 3mm in case of the India Meteorological Department, Santacruz.
The onset of monsoon too has not been declared as rains continue to evade the city; its official annual date is June 11. Weathermen, though, are hopeful the situation would improve by this weekend. In IMD’s five-day forecast, a yellow alert has been issued for Thane for Monday, June 26, indicating heavy rainfall in isolated places. Mumbai is likely to see moderate rainfall during the period. Independent meteorologists say monsoon circulation itself has been weak, but the active phase is expected to begin soon.
Sushma Nair, scientist, IMD Mumbai, said rains are expected by this weekend. “IMD has issued a forecast of moderate rain for the city as well as adjoining areas from June 24 for the next three days,” she said. Nevertheless, experts are uncertain if this substantial rainfall deficit can be compensated during the active rain p hase next week. Akshay Deoras, research scientist, National Centre for Atmospheric Science and Department of Meteorology, University of Reading, UK, said, “The rainfall situation mayimprove from June 25, as a lowpressure system is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal and move towards Madhya Pradesh. ” Abhijit Modak of Konkan Weather blog said the lowpressure area will bring moisture with strong westerlies.
