Children's author toughest to spell is Roald Dahl: Bookstore survey

MUMBAI: September 13, marks the birth centenary of celebrated children's author Roald Dahl.

With more than 250 million books sold, one would assume that Roald Dahl has nothing to complain. However, a survey by

Crossword Bookstore

has found Roald Dahl to be most difficult to spell.

had reached out to kids and asked them to fill in the name of the author against popular book series. The series shared were -

Harry Potter

, Winnie The Pooh, The Famous Five, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and The Blue Umbrella.

The children were between the age of 6 and 8 years and had either already been exposed to these books in the past, or were close to considering them. Over 1,600 children were polled in August 2016.

Roald Dahl's entry was marked by a 52% error in spelling; whereas children seemed to have no problems spelling JK Rowling,

Enid Blyton

, AA Milne and Ruskin Bond at all.

Kinjal Shah, CEO Crossword Bookstores, said, “Its almost as if kids recognise his books, without needing to know the spelling. His writing is so ageless, that kids can’t believe that Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was written more than 50 years ago or that Dahl passed away over 25 years ago.”
