Chargesheet filed against 2 IRS officers in 60L bribery case

Mumbai: CBI recently submitted a chargesheet against two IRS officers—joint commissioner Rahul Kumar and additional commissioner Deepak Kumar Sharma—along with three CGST superintendents in a corruption case. The case involves the overnight detention of a businessman who was released only after senior officers allegedly negotiated a bribe.
CBI had earlier submitted a chargesheet against one superintendent, Sachin Gokulka. Three others—Nitin Kumar Gupta, Nikhil Agrawal and Bijendra Janawa—have been named in this supplementary chargesheet.
The CGST officials held a Goregaon businessman on Sept 4, 2024, and threatened him with arrest unless he paid Rs 60 lakh—reduced from Rs 80 lakh—to resolve a pharmaceutical firm's matter.
Kumar, who previously worked in the office, was contacted by the businessman's relative. He coordinated with Sharma for the release in exchange for a bribe, introducing chartered accountant Raj Aggarwal to handle the transactions. The victim was forced to arrange Rs 30 lakh through hawala. The CGST officials let him go the next day, demanding that the remaining amount be arranged by that evening.
After his release, the victim approached CBI. On its instructions, he met Agrawal with Rs 20 lakh, leading to the latter's arrest. Agrawal led CBI to one Abhisekh Mehta, who was meant to transfer the money to Gokulka. Gokulka arrived with two women to collect the money and tried to escape after realising that they were under surveillance. He was later arrested.
