Champions Bombay Scottish handed trophy, but not medals

Mumbai: Young Vihaan Anand shook off a stomach bug to score the decisive goal as Bombay Scottish ‘A’ (Mahim) beat CNM School (Vile Parle) 1-0 to win the MSSA U-10 division one inter-school football final at Azad Maidan on Friday.
A closely fought game looked headed for penalties until class four student Vihaan converted a free kick earned by the Mahim side in the dying minutes.
Scottish’s celebrations, however, were dampened when it came to the presentation ceremony as their jubilant players watched the runners-up and St Mary’s ICSE ‘A’ (Mazagaon), who finished third, collect their medals, only to then learn there were no gold medals for them when it was their turn to be awarded. MSSA football secretary Sebastian Fernandes attributed the lapse to a delay on the part of the vendors which meant the champions could only celebrate with the trophy following their win.
“Unfortunately, some gold medals got misplaced at the inter-school athletics meet held earlier this week, so the staff had placed an order for more gold medals. They were supposed to come in time for the final today but unfortunately there is a delay in the delivery,” Fernandes said, adding: “I know it doesn’t look good for the winners not to have got their medals. It should have been sorted out earlier, but we have told the coaches, the medals will be sent as soon as they arrive.”
