PUNE\NEW DELHI: In a significant development, the Pune police have traced and confiscated the original fax of the common admissions test question paper that was sent from Delhi by the gang selling the leaked papers in Pune.
The CAT question paper leak was exposed in Pune by a ‘Times of India’ team and Pune crime branch sleuths following a dramatic sting operation and a series of raids that began on Saturday night and continued through Sunday morning.
Police sources confirmed to ‘TOI’ that the original fax was recovered by the crime branch.
“The fax was confiscated from one of the accused, who had hidden it,’’ the sources said. Meanwhile, the CBI has absolved faculty members of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) of playing a role in the scam, but has pointed an accusing finger at the staff of the printing press, saying evidence suggested a collusion between touts and press staff. CBI director P C Sharma said here on Tuesday that further investigations would be carried out to unearth the entire truth.
He dismissed suggestions that IIM faculty members were involved in the leak. One of the most crucial documents in the case, the fax of the question paper sent from Delhi to Pune, was allegedly sent to a provisions store in Aundh, Pune, by the main accused, Chandan alias Baba from Delhi.
According to the police, the fax was received in Pune by Surjit Shirshir Chaudhary alias Pom and Uditav Ujjwal Sinha, both originally of Ranchi, Bihar. Then, Niteshkumar Singh and Yasbirkumar Singh took possession of it.
The fax was recovered from Yasbirkumar. The police said Chaudhary and Sinha passed a photocopy of the paper to Anamika Singh and Preet Raman alias Cherri, both originally of Ranchi, and had promised one copy to Mahesh Raghuvanshi of Amravati.
