MUMBAI: For just a couple of minutes, a friend of Mihir Shah, the 24-year-old accused in the BMW hit-and-run case in Worli, switched on his phone early Tuesday. That was enough for police to trace the location of Mihir, son of a Shiv Sena functionary, and arrest him from a hotel in Virar in the afternoon, almost 60 hours after he rammed a two-wheeler and killed a woman, Kaveri Nakhwa (45).
Mihir, his mother and two sisters had been on the run from early Sunday morning and their mobiles were switched off. Police however had tracked down numbers he had called regularly and noted down numbers of a few friends he dialled regularly. Their phones too were switched off, but one of the numbers suddenly came alive on Tuesday morning, resulting in the arrest.
The friend, whose identity is unclear, has been detained for questioning. Mihir’s mother and sisters were detained by the crime branch as police said they were shielding him, but later allowed to go. The mother and sisters were found staying in a resort in Shahapur.
