MUMBAI: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is finally ready to take up the task of concretising 57 roads, but only if the rain relents in two days. Besides the 57 roads, being concretised at a cost of Rs 342 crore, 163 km of surface will be asphalted.
"These are the roads that were identified by us at the beginning of the year. We will also start the work of laying paver blocks at 13 junctions," chief engineer (roads) Mohan Kadam said.
He, however, added that major repairs on the roads severely damaged by the deluge could be started only after the state government sanctioned the requisite funds.
Some of the major roads that will be taken up for concretisation include Madame Cama Road (Mantralaya), Maharshi Karve Marg (Marine Lines), Carter Road (Bandra West) and Mulund-Goregaon Link Road. A total of 10 roads will be concretised in the city, 19 in the western suburbs and 28 in the eastern suburbs.
"This year's budget provides Rs 202 crore for roads. The rest of the amount will be adjusted in our consecutive budgets," mayor Datta Dalvi said. The civic body is also deliberating on using plastic while laying roads in Mumbai.
A few months back a Bangalore-based firm had made a presentation on roads using plastic in Mumbai.
