BMC demands Khar society’s land in 7 days, residents upset

MUMBAI: Over 200 families from a housing society in Khar are a worried lot. The H-west ward recently issued a notice saying it would take possession of the land in front of six buildings in the colony within seven days for the road-widening work on 2nd Hasnabad Lane.
The BMC said the land, located inside the colony, lies within the line of a public street.
Residents of R K Nagar CHS Union Ltd, which comprises 20 buildings, said they received the notice on January 17. The civic administration cannot take possession of the land at such a short notice, they added.
“We understand that the land on our society premises is being taken for road-widening work, but the same is likely to have serious implications on those residing in the colony. The sewerage line and the water line falls within the area which the administration plans to take over. This means, we will have to restructure the lines, which cannot be done in seven days,” said Umesh Tawde, secretary of R K Nagar CHS Union Ltd.
Suresh Pillai, one of the residents, pointed out that pushing the society’s boundary wall closer to the buildings would make it difficult for emergency vehicles to enter the colony.
Deputy municipal commissioner (zone 3) Rambhau Dhas said the work has been pending for long and the project details are available with the assistant municipal commissioner of H-West ward, Vijay Kamble.
Despite repeated attempts, Kamble was unavailable for a comment.
