MMRDA’s BKC–Vakola elevated road project
MMRDA has begun work on a 1.2-km elevated extension of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) connecting Vakola in Santacruz to BKC.
Signal-Free Corridor
The 2+2 lane corridor will provide a signal-free link, easing congestion and reducing travel time between BKC and Western Express Highway (WEH) by up to 35 minutes.
Land Handover by MU
Mumbai University handed over 18,834 sq m of land for the elevated corridor; total land contribution including additional roads will be 34,715 sq m.
Existing Commute Routes
Commuters previously used either a 3.8 km route via Pipeline Road or a 5 km route via Kalanagar to reach BKC.
Funding Through TDR
The elevated corridor will be built along the university’s boundary, with only pillars occupying land, ensuring no functional loss of MU property.
Boosting Mumbai’s East-West Link
The new extension aims to enhance connectivity between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs, offering a smoother commute while substantially cutting travel time and alleviating congestion in the busy corridor.
A drive for economic growth
The project encountered challenges such as land acquisition hurdles and rising costs. The updated budget is now estimated at around Rs 645 crore. Despite these obstacles, the SCLR extension is expected to significantly enhance Mumbai’s infrastructure, benefit daily commuters, and contribute to the city’s economic growth.
Connecting key junctions
The extension, connecting key points like Vakola Junction, Ambedkar Chowk, University Junction, and BKC Junction, is anticipated to greatly reduce traffic congestion between Kurla and the Vakola elevated road.
1960s plan shaped Mumbai’s East-West road network
In 1962, Wilbur Smith and Associates were commissioned to assess transport issues in Greater Mumbai. Their December 1963 report to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposed multiple link roads, including a 4-lane route connecting Santacruz to Chembur, aimed at enhancing east-west connectivity across the city.
