MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday extended by six months the bail given to an accused in journalist J Dey's murder case, Vinod Asrani alias Vinod Chembur, so that he can find a donor and undergo a liver transplant.
A division bench of Justice P V Hardas and Justice P N Deshmukh was hearing a plea filed by Asrani for extension of bail, which was given to him on December 12 last year after he moved the court saying his liver and kidneys were damaged and he required treatment.
Asrani's senior counsel Adhik Shirodkar and advocate Yogesh Dandekar told the court that "his liver had failed and unfortunately, he had not been able to find a donor". Shirodkar then cited the instance of Khadse who had to travel abroad for his transplant. He told the court that transplant procedures are time consuming in India and even Maharashtra's opposition leader Eknath Khadse had faced a tough time getting the operation done in India though his wife was the donor.
The court was informed that certificates issued by six major hospitals confirm Asrani's medical condition. Prosecutor Ajay Gadkari said that the statements of Asrani's advocates are verified and true. The judges, in their order, observed that Asrani is in serious condition and extended his bail up to June 15, 2014, purely on medical grounds.
