Shinde, a 24-year-old contractual sweeper at a school in Badlapur, was arrested on August 17 for allegedly sexually abusing two minor girls in the school toilet five days earlier.

According to an official, Shinde was killed near Mumbra bypass in Thane on Monday evening while being transported in a police vehicle for an investigation related to a complaint filed by his former wife. He allegedly snatched a policeman's gun, shot, and injured an API, prompting another officer from the escort team to fire at him. Shinde was pronounced dead at the Kalwa civic hospital.

As the incident involves a death in police custody, the Maharashtra CID will conduct the investigation, a senior official stated on Tuesday.

The CID team will visit the incident site at Mumbra bypass, record statements from the police personnel present in the vehicle, and also take statements from Akshay Shinde's parents.

Shinde's body was transferred from the Kalwa civic hospital in Thane to the state-run J J Hospital for an in-camera post-mortem in the presence of expert doctors on Tuesday morning.

Akshay Shinde's father, Anna Shinde, has called for an inquiry into his son's killing. The family has disputed the police's claim that Shinde fired at a policeman first, leading to the police retaliating in self-defense, resulting in his death.
