MUMBAI: An autorickshaw driver who was on the run after groping a teenage girl in Borivali last week was arrested by the police from Nalasopara on Wednesday. Naresh Singh, the 43-year-old accused, had switched off his phone and was hiding, police said. He would earlier drive autos in Nalasopara and was well-versed with the area, investigators found.
On Aug 31, the 15-year-old victim had hailed Singh's auto outside a school. After plying for some distance, Singh pretended that the auto had stopped working and halted the vehicle. On two occasions, he groped the girl. She complained to her family and approached the cops. A case was registered under the Pocso Act.
The police then checked CCTV cameras of the route taken by the auto and found the vehicle's registration number. They kept a watch in his neighbourhood even as they tried to look for more leads through footage from other cameras for four days. Finally, they traced him to Nalasopara on Wednesday.
