MUMBAI: A special court on Saturday rejected the bail plea of alleged bookie Anil Jaisinghani, arrested in the Rs 10-crore
extortion case lodged by
Amruta Fadnavis, wife of deputy chief minister and home minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The court, however, granted bail to his cousin Nirmal Jaisinghani. The cousins were formally arrested on March 20. Anil’s daughter Aniksha was granted bail in the case on March 27.
During arguments on the bail plea on Friday, special public prosecutor, Ajay Misar, submitted that investigation so far clearly shows that the accused had planned the conspiracy with the help of his daughter for his personal benefit.
The prosecution also submitted that he is a habitual offender, and at one time, there were 17 serious offences registered against him and on date also five offences are pending for trial against him.
Anil and Nirmal’s advocate, Manan Sanghai, said that this was a politically motivated case just to appease somebody.
Meanwhile, the court has granted the Enforcement Directorate permission to take custody of Anil in a money laundering case registered in Gujarat. “Superintendent of Taloja Central Prison is directed to hand over custody of accused Anil to the assistant director, Directorate of Enforcement Ahmedabad zonal office Gujarat for investigation. After the investigation, custody of accused be lodged in Taloja Central Prison,” the court said. tnn
