MUMBAI: Bollywood action director TinuVerma
(53) was held early on Thursday, six days after he allegedly assaulted his stepbrother, ManoharVerma
, with a sword at Malad
(E). He was traced to Shahapur, 85 km from here, and was produced before a magistrate court later in the day and remanded to police custody till August 2. He faces charges of attempt to commit murder.
"Tinu switched off his cell phone after the incident. We formed several teams of officers to trace him," said Kurar senior police inspector Subhash Dafle. One team visited Tinu's house in Amboli, while another went to his hometown in Rajasthan.
A few days later, the police learned that Tinu's sibling owns a farmhouse in Shahapur.
"A third team was sent to Shahapur, but we realized he was not at the farmhouse. After keeping a close watch, we found him hiding in the house of his Shahapur-based house-help. He boasted that had his motorcycle keys been around, he would have sped off and nobody could have ever caught up with him," an investigating officer said.
Tinu is also wanted by the Amboli police in a case in which he had allegedly assaulted Mahendra, another step-brother, last year.
He went to Malad (E), where Manohar resides with his family on August 23. Manohar objected to Tinu dumping film props on the property. The duo had an altercation and Tinu picked up a sword and allegedly assaulted Manohar. Manohar sustained serious injuries and was taken to Kokilaben Ambani Hospital. The police have clarified that politician Narendra Verma, Tinu's sibling, is not linked to the attack.
"We hope Tinu does not get out on bail. Our lives are still at risk as he is dangerous and is likely to attack my husband again," Manohar's wife, Vani, told TOI. "Tinu only knows how to use his muscles and not his brains. That is very scary." Vani added that Manohar underwent surgery.
Vani said that had the police arrested Tinu after he attacked Mahendra last year, her husband would not have been assaulted now.
