Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray carrying a party flag and accompanied by former Mumbai mayors Kishori Pednekar and Snehal Ambekar, former MLAs Sachin Ahir and Sunil Shinde, and activists ‘opened’ the second carriageway of Delisle bridge in Lower Parel late on Thursday. The action came on the eve of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray’s death anniversary.
Aaditya posted on X: “Inauguration of Delisle bridge. Now don’t want VIPs from Khoke Sarkar, public are suffering…” Earlier in the day, he told TOI, “We waited for two days for their load testing and lights on the railways portion to be done. Tomorrow [Friday] if they don’t open it, we, as citizens, will have to.”
On Thursday, TOI found that the second carriageway of the bridge was almost ready, but when contacted, BMC officials were non-committal on the inauguration date.
In July 2018, Delisle bridge was closed after an IIT-B report declared it unsafe. Then the deadline for the new bridge was revised thrice. On Ju- ne 1, one arm of the bridge, connecting Ganpatrao Kadam Marg with N M Joshi Marg, was opened for traffic. Then, on September 17, BMC threw open a part of the second arm of the bridge, connecting Lower Parel with Currey Road, ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi.
