MUMBAI: A 32-year-old man hanged himself from the ceiling at his residence in a chawl at Jai Ambe Society behind Amrut Nagar in Ghatkopar (West) on Friday morning.
According to the police, the deceased, Sagar Pawar, was upset as his mother Savitri (55) had refused to hand over property documents to him. Pawar, an alcoholic, was employed on contract with Godrej at Vikhroli.
He was on a 15-day break, the police said. He wanted the property documents in order to sell their house, which his mother was opposed to, an officer said. -V Narayan
During the probe the Parksite police learnt through deceased Sagar Pawar's mother Savitri, 55, that he was annoyed when she denied to hand over the property documents. "Pawar was a drunkard and wanted the property documents to sell it and earn money to buy alcohol," said a police officer.
The matter came to light when Pawar's wife Jyoti returned home around 7am after fetching water from the neighbourhood. Jyoti, in the statement, said, "The door was locked from inside and my husband did not respond to the repeated knocks made on the doors. I suspected something wrong. I called the neighbours and with their help we entered the house after breaking the door and found him hanging from the ceiling."
Pawar was contract labourer employed with the
Godrej Company in Vikhroli and was on rest period. "Pawar's mother said he was restless for the last 15 days and even argued with her to handover the property documents. He took the extreme step of killing self when he did not succeed in his attempt to sell the house," Parksite police senior inspector Laxman Bhure said.
Bhure said, "Pawar's mother tried to counsel him that they will come on roads if he sells the house. But he was not ready to understand."
A case of accidental death report (ADR) has been registered.
