MUMBAI: The Dahisar police have arrested three persons in connection with a fake documents racket. The trio, held on Thursday, used to dish out fake driving licences and ration cards. Besides a set of bogus documents, the police also seized computers, printers and other equipment from the hideout of the accused at Malwani. The arrested men have been identified as Mangesh Ubale (31, resident of Borivli), Ravi Shetty (38, from Kandivli) and Suhail Solkar (33, of Malwani).
Solkar was the brain behind the racket, said police officials, adding that the gang used to operate from his residence.
Acting on a tip-off, we arrested Ubale and Shetty from a place near Dahisar station (east). We got information that the two were to meet somebody in connection with the sale of fake documents,'' said senior inspector Ramesh Keni. After interrogation, the arrested duo led the police to Solkar. The police are now verifying whether the trio has a crime record or not. The modus operandi was simple. The accused would look out for people who sought bank loans or houses under the SRA scheme. For that, it was necessary to produce ration cards or driving licences to complete the formalities. The trio would then dish out fake documents at reasonable rates. We will make inquiries at the rationing department and the RTO,'' said Keni. More people could be involved in the racket.''The police are trying to find out the places where the fake documents have been submitted by those who have bought them from the trio. The accused are believed to be professionals who have studied the genuine documents closely before churning out the fakes.Non-bailable charges were slapped on the arrested men, who were produced in a local court on Friday for remand.
