Assistant commissioner of police Vijay Surya confirmed the arrests on Wednesday and said more would follow.
A Vir Chakra awardee for showing exemplary courage during the 1971 war, Brigadier (retd) Sharma has been living in Kharghar since his retirement from the army in 2001. It was around 8.30 pm on Monday when the youths beat up the former army officer after he objected to reckless driving by some of them.
The youths, riding a motorcycle, had dangerously overtaken the car in which Brigadier (retd) Sharma and his wife Geeta were travelling. "My husband’s eye injury will still take three weeks to heal... the arms and knees are a little better now. We hope all the accused youths are arrested," Geeta told TOI. "Some people had attacked a building in Kharghar just because residents had asked some village boys not to kill pigeons. Such violence has to stop."
