23 hospitalised after food poisoning scare at wedding reception in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Dinner at a

wedding reception

in

Bandra

(E) turned into a

food poisoning scare

after 23 people vomited, felt nauseous and had to be rushed to civic-run V N Desai

Hospital

in Santacruz late on Sunday. Six guests, including three children, were still hospitalised on Monday evening.

Doctors said the patients arrived from 12.30am to 2am in a weak condition. Most gave a history of recurrent bouts of vomiting and loose motions, and said they had attended a wedding at Samaj Mandir Hall on Sunday night. Eleven adults and nine children, as young as eight months to one year, had come to the hospital.

“My son was constantly vomiting, he was so weak that he could not walk. We got him to the hospital at 1am,” said Asma Sheikh, mother of Anas Nissar (4). Asma was attending her 26-year-old nephew’s wedding along with her husband and some other relatives. Asma said the children had a lot of juices, which included chikoo, watermelon and guava.

Medical superintendent Dr Rajashree Jadhav said three children, admitted with weakness, have been kept under observation. “Many kids had juices and gravy that possibly caused the symptoms,” said the paediatrician on call. Dr Jadhav added that while some children had loose motions till Monday morning, nobody was serious.

“I had to go to the bathroom constantly and my stomach was burning inside. I could not stand at all,” said Naseema Sheikh (54), who added that there were several chicken dishes. “My daughter (12), son (11) and I started vomiting. It was very hard to take care of my children while I was facing the same condition.” said Sabia Shiekh, who came from Aurangabad for the reception.

Dr Jadhav said the patients would be discharged once they have fully recovered. Kherwadi police senior inspector Rajendra Patil said they had made a diary entry and a probe is on. “Action will be initiated if they find negligence led to the food poisoning. The incident occurred at a community hall where the marriage reception was on. We have not received any complaint,” said Patil.
