MUMBAI: A 22-year-old woman has been apprehended by the police for discarding her newborn baby girl in a dustbin outside Sion Hospital in Mumbai last week. The infant was found dead.

The arrest was made under IPC Section 317, pertaining to the exposure and abandonment of a child under 12 years by a parent or guardian. Additionally, Section 315, related to an act intended to prevent a child from being born alive or to cause its death after birth, has been applied. The police are also considering the possibility of adding a murder charge against the woman.

The police are currently in the process of questioning the woman to understand the motive behind her actions. She has admitted that the child was born out of wedlock, leading her to give birth inside the hospital toilet before disposing of the baby from the second floor. The infant succumbed to head injuries.

The woman is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
