Mumbai: The Bandra police took two individuals into custody, one of whom is the owner of a meat shop, for allegedly attacking police officers who were attempting to confiscate goats from the establishment. The officers were enforcing a ban on animal slaughter and meat sales imposed by the BMC in response to demands from the Jain community during the Paryushan festival.
The two accused, identified as Faiyyaz Kothmire, the shop owner, and Huzaifa Arif Shaikh, were charged with obstructing government servants in the performance of their duties.
According to the complaint filed by Ravindra Divekar, a chief officer from the BMC market department, he received information at 8 am on Wednesday about a slaughterhouse operating near Lucky restaurant in Bandra west. Divekar notified the police and proceeded to the location accompanied by constables Bharat Nangre, Pratik Kadam, Pravin Nachnekar, and Sankay Kalay. Upon observing several goats at the mutton shop, the officers entered the premises to seize the animals. However, Kothmire and Shaikh refused to surrender the goats and proceeded to obstruct and physically assault the officers.
