MEERUT: A 45-year old woman and her two daughters died after being hit by a Vande Bharat Express train while trying to cross the track in Kankharkheda area of Meerut on Sunday.

"The woman and her children were sitting on a rickshaw being pulled by her husband Naresh Kumar, 47, a daily wage labourer. The man escaped with minor injuries as he noticed the oncoming train and jumped off the track. She tried to save her children and got delayed. The investigation is under way," said Piyush Kumar Singh, SP-City, Meerut.

Police said the man was inebriated at the time of the incident.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was in shock after seeing the bodies. "It happened in a fraction of a second. It's the first time I've seen such a horrific incident," he said.

Meanwhile, Vinod Kumar, SHO, GRP police station, Meerut said the train was going from Delhi to Dehradun. "The victims tried to cross the railway track despite seeing the gate closed," said Kumar.
