Villager spends ₹1.2L on buffalo’s b’day to ‘flaunt clout’ before panchayat polls
Bijnor: In a spectacle that has left locals both amused and bemused, a villager from Sungarh Maafi in Amroha district spent over Rs 1.2 lakh celebrating his buffalo's birthday — complete with a DJ party, feast, and garland of currency notes — in what many believe was an attempt to showcase influence ahead of next year's panchayat elections. The celebration, organised by Mohammad Israar (50) on Friday, featured a grand procession through the village streets, a cake-cutting ceremony, and a community meal for around 600 guests. Videos of the lavish event have been widely circulated on social media, drawing laughter and speculation about the motive behind the unusual display.Villagers said the extravagance was less about affection for the buffalo — named ‘Sheroo' — and more about "testing political waters" before the polls. "Israar used the celebration to draw public attention. He is a strong contender for the upcoming panchayat elections and wanted to assess his political strength in the village," said Taufiq, one of his political rivals.Speaking to TOI, Israar said the event was an expression of affection for his animal companion. "My buffalo was born on Nov 7. It was his second birthday. Last year, we just cut a cake, but this time, we celebrated on a grand scale. Sheroo is like family to us," he said. When asked about his political ambitions, he added, "Our village has around 4,000 people, including 2,700 voters. My family members have asked me to contest the panchayat elections. I haven't decided yet, but everyone who came blessed Sheroo — and maybe me too." Panchayat polls in the region are expected to be held early next year.
