MEERUT: A UP police sub-inspector who lost his 47-year-old wife to Covid on April 22 has accused the government hospital staff here of “killing her” by failing to attend to her.

In a video that was shot outside the hospital here on Monday, a distraught SI Bhik Chand, who is posted in Muzaffarnagar, can be heard abusing the hospital staff while narrating how his wife, Roopmati, died gasping for air. His outburst was recorded by an onlooker, who later uploaded it.

“She was not given any medicine. I approached the chief medical superintendent at least 50 times but no one came. She was not even given water and eventually died,” an agitated Chand purportedly said in the video. Roopwati was rushed to the medical emergency ward of the hospital on April 20 after she complained of breathing problems. She had tested positive in the antigen test and was shifted to the Covid ward later in the night.

Speaking to TOI, Chand alleged, “My wife was killed by the hospital. They did not administer any treatment to my wife. I had complained to the SP (City) who then sent an inspector but we did not get any assistance from the hospital. I will get an FIR registered and take this case to its logical conclusion.”

Refuting the allegations, Dr Brigadier GS Manchanda, principal of Muzaffarnagar Medical College, issued an official statement on this matter. He said, “She wasCovid-19 positive and had many severe comorbidities. She had severe infection in both lungs, has type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Her condition deteriorated and she died on April 22. There was no negligence in her treatment." A few days ago, Sachin Saini, a resident, had alleged that his pregnant wife was wrongly admitted to the Covid facility because of which he lost her. His video had been widely circulated on social media.
