MEERUT: A man accused of cow slaughter was injured during a confrontation with the police in the Mawana area of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when the police were recovering equipment allegedly used for cow slaughter from the accused, identified as Amir.
According to Mawana police station SHO Rajesh Kumar Kamboj, Amir attempted to escape by snatching a sub-inspector's pistol.
"As the police personnel tried to catch him, Amir fired at them. In retaliatory firing, the accused sustained a gunshot wound to one of his legs," the SHO said.
Amir has been admitted to a local hospital, and the police have registered a case against him under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
