: Two alleged cattle thieves were arrested after a brief encounter with police on Thursday.

The have been identified as

Riyaz

of

Bhanaira

and

Jahiruddin

of Najibabad. There are 22 criminal cases pending against Riyaz in different police stations and six against Jahiruddin, police said.

Addressing a pressing conference, superintendent of police Sanjeev Tyagi said, “Police patrol close to Bhanaira village on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday received a tip off that miscreants were planning to loot commuters. Police reached the spot and cordoned off the area. The miscreants fired at the police team when they spotted us. Police had to open retaliatory firing at the accused. While ee managed to arrest Riyaz and Jahiruddin, their accomplices managed to escape. Police are on the hunt to nab them.”

The police said that they have recovered a country-made pistol and vehicle from the accused.

“The police have recovered three cattle, a country-made pistol and a vehicle from their possession. During interrogation, those arrested said that they would steal cattle and also indulge in various criminal cases.” SP added.
