MEERUT: A 26-year-old man, Pankaj Kumar, from Meerut's Dungrawali village, left his pre-wedding rituals at a temple to chase down a mini-truck driver who purportedly stole a garland decorated with full of Rs 50 notes from his wedding party.

The incident came to light on Monday after the entire episode, captured by a passerby in his mobile on Saturday, was widely circulated online with many praising the man for his "bravery" while others saying that "it was a foolish act as he could have got seriously hurt".

Kumar said that he was on his way to a village temple with his family when the vehicle moving at a considerable speed brushed past a few of them and sped away on the Delhi-Dehradun highway.

Kumar said that it all happened in a few seconds and he realised that the driver had snatched his wedding garland. He quickly hopped on to a passing motorcycle and pursued the vehicle on the highway for around 500m.

Following the brief chase, Kumar jumped on the moving mini-truck.

In a one-minute video, the groom - still in his wedding dress- could be seen climbing on the vehicle and entering its cabin through the window before successfully forcing the driver to stop. The driver was then thrashed by Kumar and a few others.

However, the vehicle's owner Manish Sehgal told TOI: "The garland story was a fabricated one. We've filed a police complaint and would pursue the matter. My driver, Jagpal Singh, is innocent."
