Meerut: Planning to drink and drive on the New Year's eve? Beware, the traffic cops may be after you. In order to ensure safe New year celebrations and prevent road accidents, the traffic police have made elaborate plans to take on drunk drivers. The traffic cops, who otherwise work till 9 pm, will be deployed on all busy roads in the city till 2 am on January 1 to check drunken driving. “The traffic police will be deployed on the main crossings in the city with breath analysers to check that no one drives under the influence of alcohol,” said SP, traffic, P K Tiwari.
Some of the areas that are definitely going to see a sizeable number of tarrfic cops include Tejgarhi, Begampul, Hapur Adda, Baghpat Adda and Bachcha Park.
The city residents are all set to celebrate the New Year and most of the restaurants are already booked. Some of the residents have made plans to avoid drunken driving. 45-year-old Suresh Jain said, “If I am going to a New Year party, I am bound to have a drink or two, after which I wouldn’t want to drive. So, I have hired a driver for the night who will drop me home after the party.”
The traffic police will also be setting up speed barriers so that rash drivers can be checked. Tiwari claimed that police officers will be deployed with speed intrceptors to check that people don’t indulge in rash driving.
