MEERUT:
Seven inmates escaped from police custody
in two separate incidents over the last 24 hours in the district. One of them, an accused in a triple murder case, was again arrested on Friday. On Wednesday evening, four accused managed to cut a hole in a mesh wire window at the district court premises. Barely 24 hours later, three more undertrials escaped by breaking open the window of the police van they were being transported in. This caused the police department to swing into damage control mode as
Saharanpur
DIG JK Shahi announced a reward of Rs 12,000 on each one of them.
Addressing a press conference in Saharanpur on Friday, SSP
Bharat Singh Yadav
said, “On Wednesday, four people had escaped by cutting a hole in the mesh wire window. We formed special teams to raid all possible locations where the inmates could be. A team from
Qutubsher
police station found one of the accused after receiving a tip-off. Around 7 am on Friday,
Nadeem Ali
was arrested near Qutubsher.”
Yadav added, “When we raided the location, we also found country-made weapons in his possession. During interrogation, we found that his bail plea had been rejected by the Allahabad high court. He was fairly certain of getting convicted, which is why he chose to escape from custody. We are now interrogating him to find more on the whereabouts of the others. We will soon have all of them in custody.”
