MEERUT: In sheer embarrassment to UP government, officials at the crime meeting of Meerut zone (comprising some of the most restive districts of western UP like Meerut, Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, etc.) have found that the instances of “rapes, murders, abductions, loot” have increased in the past one year.

The statement was made by additional commissioner (Meerut)

Jai Shankar Dubey

in a meeting attended by SSPs and DMs of six districts of the division.

“A comparative analysis of March 2017 and April 2018 clearly suggests there has been increase in the incidents of rapes and murders in Meerut and abductions in Ghaziabad,” he said.

“However, unprecedented levels of crackdown on criminals have also been witnessed in the region during this period.”

Giving statistics,

Dubey

said, “Gunda Act has been slapped on 2,805 criminals while 501 have been booked under the Gangster Act.

This comes just two months after CM Yogi Adityanath had claimed that law and order under his government has been under control and crime against women is minimal.

Crime against women, on the contrary, has increased throughout UP. For instance, between January and March this year, 899 rapes were committed in the state as compared to 873 in the corresponding period last year. Similarly, abductions were 3,573 as compared to 3,011 last year. Eve teasing has almost doubled from 127 cases to 248.

During the meeting, divisional commissioner (Meerut) Prabhat Kumar directed the police administration to solve crimes involving

SC/ST Act

on a priority basis. “Be it providing compensation to them or slapping Gunda Act on anti-social elements, do it fast. Besides, there has to be special focus on crime against women. Police need to be extra sensitive when dealing with women.”

The commissioner also ordered plantation drive on the government land reclaimed from land mafia.
