Meerut: On July 9 2016, bungalow number 210 B, which was declared illegal by the Allahabad high court, was demolished in an anti-encroachment drive by the MCB. During the drive, four people who were still in the building were buried in the rubble and lost their lives.
Five officials of the Meerut Cantonment Board (MCB) were held responsible for the deaths as they were in-charge of the drive. Now, the Meerut Police has sought sanction to prosecute these five officials under sections 147 (rioting) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Seeking to prosecute chief executive engineer Anuj Singh, assistant engineer Piyush Gautam, junior engineers Awadesh Yadav and Arvind Gupta and sanitary inspector Yogesh Yadav, the police have sought sanction under section 197 of the CRPC. Earlier, in August 2016, the five officials were arrested and spent between 14 days and 2 months in jail. One of the officials, Anuj Singh, was suspended, while all others are performing their duties.
