Meerut: Two days after the mother and two sisters of a Baghpat man accused of “abducting” an 18-year-old girl consumed poison and died following alleged harassment by police, the National Human Rights Commission took suo-motu cognisance of media reports and issued a notice to the UP government in the matter on Friday.
The commission observed that “it seems that the law enforcing agencies failed to deal with the situation sensibly resulting in violation of human rights”.

NHRC issued notices to the chief secretary and the director general of police, UP, and called for a detailed report on the incident within four weeks. It also asked for the “present status of investigation of the case and whether any relief had been granted to the family of the victims”.
Prince Singh, 22, had eloped with a girl from his village, Bachaud, in Baghpat on May 3.
