MUZAFFARNAGAR: Nine days after non-bailable arrest warrants (NBW) were issued against 23 police personnel for not appearing before it in a 29-year-old case, 18 accused cops appeared before a court here which granted their pleas to recall the NBWs but directed them to submit personal bonds of Rs 1 lakh each in the court.

They spent six hours in judicial custody before appearing in court on Saturday, said officials.

The court of additional district judge (ADJ-7) Shakti Singh has fixed March 17 as the next date of hearing in the matter, said district government counsel Rajeev Sharma.

The court had on February 23 issued the NBWs against the accused police personnel from UP, who allegedly opened fire on unarmed activists who were on their way to Delhi for a rally in support of the separate state of Uttarakhand -- which was a part of UP then -- at Rampur Tiraha crossing in 1994.

Six cases were subsequently registered against the accused cops for the violence in 1994. Half a dozen people had died in the incident and some women, including minors were raped in the ensuing clashes.
