Meerut rises from tragedy to triumph: The grand launch of Meerut Mahotsav at historic Victoria Park

MEERUT: Christened as the mother of all events, the 5-day Meerut Mahotsav kickstarted on Saturday to leave an imprint on the cultural and commercial landscape of Western Uttar Pradesh. According to official estimates, Bhamashah Park, formerly known as Victoria Park, is hosting close to one lakh spectators each day. Performers include actor-politician Hema Malini, poet Kumar Vishwas, and various artists in the arena. Over 50 seminars on puppetry, kathak, startups, industry, etc., are also part of the event.

Besides, cultural nights including kavi sammelan and mushairas, Indian classical performances from Ajrara gharana, Dastangoi, brass band displays from 12 different states, and laser shows with special effects will be spread out over five days.

Notably, the venue became synonymous with the 'The Victoria Park Fire' tragedy of 2006 that claimed 65 lives and scarred a hundred more for the rest of their lives. It was the last day of a 5-day consumer appliance show when a spark from a short circuit turned the entire venue into an inferno that brought disrepute to the city at a national level.

“Undoubtedly, there was an apprehension to hold an event of such a grand scale, but we decided to move forward. Against the backdrop of that tragedy, we have made watertight security arrangements with multiple exit doors in the enclosures and venues and used non-inflammable material and other measures,” said DM Meerut Deepak Meena.

The first day was marked by the electric performance of the Sri Lankan singing sensation Thanura Madhugeet and poet cum politician Kumar Vishwas, 1857 Theatrical by Atelier, Odissi dance, and Bharat Natyam performance, in addition to the panel discussion. CDO Nupur Goyal stated that stalls have started being set up at Victoria Park, and everyone completed their preparations. A T-10 Cricket League will also be organised as part of the sports competitions.

The festival will showcase products and artwork from various districts of the state. According to Meerut District Magistrate Deepak Meena, this event will help position Meerut as a prominent brand at both national and international levels. Stalls from across the state will be set up, accompanied by vibrant cultural programs.
