UP: Harassed for dowry, woman kills self

BIJNOR: A 24-year-old woman allegedly consumed

poison

at Maniyawal village in Bijnor in early on Sunday. Her parents claimed that she took the extreme step as she was being harassed for

dowry

by her husband and in-laws. Her husband and seven others have been booked under the Dowry Act. Her husband, father-in-law and brother-in-law are at large.


According to the woman’s family, Neha (24) was married to Punit Kumar of Maniyawala village under Afjalgarh police station eight months ago. All was well during the first few months after their marriage. But something went wrong a few months ago.

They alleged that fed up of being harassed for dowry, Neha ended her life by taking poison. After getting information, Neha’s family rushed to Maniyawala and created a ruckus, alleging that she was poisoned by her husband and in-laws.

In his complaint, the deceased’s father, Syamlaal Singh of Paredi village of Moradabad district, said, “A few months after the marriage, my daughter’s in-laws started torturing her for dowry, In addition to this, they taunted and humiliated her. They had even declared her barren.”

Police have registered a case against eight persons, including her husband, Punit Kumar, father in law Deepchand, sisters-in-law Neelam, Babita, Gudia and Beena, brother-in-law Mohit Kumar and one Hariom, a local resident, for asking for dowry and murder.

Afjalgarh station house officer Tajendra Singh said, “Police have registered a case against the accused based on the complaint filed by father of the deceased. Police are trying to nab them. The accused will be arrested soon.”
