Meerut: A local court has sentenced 50-year-old Dharmender Kirthal, a resident of Baghpat district, to five years in prison under the Gangsters Act. He has over 50 criminal cases, including 10 murders and several attempts to murder, registered against him. His associates, Satyender Mukhia, who has 23 cases registered against him, and Subhash, have also received the same sentence, along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each. Over the past three years, Kirthal has had properties worth Rs 60 lakh seized.
According to SP Baghpat Vijay Vargeeya, "This is the first time he has been convicted. And the kind of influence he had, the pressure was on the witnesses to go hostile, but we gave them both assurance and security." The UP STF arrested Kirthal in Dehradun on June 7, 2021, after he had evaded the police for more than six months. At the time of his arrest, he had a Rs 50,000 reward on his head.
Two months prior to his capture, Baghpat police had seized his property in his native village, Kirthal. He had returned to the village on bail in 2015, exactly a decade after his entire family had been killed due to political rivalry. In retaliation, he carried out multiple killings. Interestingly, for most of that decade, Kirthal had been in Bulandshahr jail. He was arrested for the first time in 2006 and remained in prison until 2011.
