MEERUT: An MP/MLA court in Bulandshahr sentenced former Congress MLA from Khurja, Bansi Singh Pahadiya, to three years and 11 months imprisonment for breaching the model code of conduct and flouting Covid-19 guidelines during the 2022 assembly election campaign. Special judge Vinay Kumar Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Pahadiya.

Special public prosecutor Hitendra Verma said Pahadiya, who had joined SP, contested the 2022 state polls as SP-RLD alliance candidate.

"On Feb 3, 2022, Pahadiya organised an election rally with a convoy of 30 to 40 cars and bikes, with 400-450 people shouting slogans and beating drums. The crowd, without face masks, flouted Covid guidelines. Permission was not taken for the election rally," said Verma.

"A case was registered against Pahadiya in Khurja Nagar police station. The case was tried in the MP/MLA special court, where Pahadiya was convicted on Thursday under sections of Uttar Pradesh Public Health and Epidemic Act, the Disaster Management Act 2005, Epidemic Amendment 2020, and other relevant laws. He has been sent to jail under judicial custody," he added.
