Meerut: There is an apparent split in the ranks of All India Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti, the body that spearheads the ongoing Jat quota stir, as its UP chief and national president are talking in to different tones. The samiti’s UP chief, Manvendra Singh, on Saturday announced that the movement will be re-launched in 22 districts of western UP, but its national president, Yashpal Malik, said that any such movement cannot begin since the samiti leaders had given a three-month time to the Centre, which is not over yet.
“We are re-launching the agitation as the government has done very little to ensure that the right of Jats is given to them. They are taking our silence as a sign of our weakness. We have written a letter to the prime minister asking him to keep his promise. He had assured us that Jats will get reservation, but till now that has not happened. We will be starting the agitation again next week in 22 districts of western UP. We will be going from district to district and holding meetings,” Manvendra Singh said.
Samiti’s national chief Yashpal Malik, however, said, “There is no re-launch of the agitation yet. We had given the government three months in April and we will abide by that.”
In the recent past, Malik has been accused by the samiti’s leaders of swindling of funds and going soft on the central leadership. In Haryana, Khap leaders alleged that Malik had exploited the sentiments of the community by promising to get the youths languishing in jail arrested during 2016 violence released but had utterly failed to fulfil his promise. They reiterated their demand that no one would be permitted to misuse community funds for personal gains.
