MEERUT: A day after Rs 3 lakh were seized in the
new currency notes
in Saharanpur, police is now investigating a possible note-exchange racket operating out of the district’s Qutubsher town.
Police took three people into custody but were forced to let them off since it could not find “sufficient proof” of currency notes being exchanged illegally. The three accused are now being grilled by
Income Tax department sleuths.
“On Sunday, we got a tip-off from an anonymous source that a group of men have set up a shop near a temple on Ambala road in Qutubsher. According to the tip, they were running a racket under which they had acquired vast amounts of new currency notes and were exchanging demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes for a fee. I constituted a special team to raid their location and we found them near the temple with wads of cash in their possession,” Saharanpur SSP
Manoj Tiwari told TOI.
“When we raided the location, we found cash in Rs 2,000 notes. However, we did not find any money in demonetised currency notes. It is possible that the old notes may have been hidden at another location. But there is no evidence to prove the allegations. That is why they have not been formally arrested. However, IT sleuths are now grilling the accused to ascertain where they got the cash from,” Tiwari added.
