MEERUT: To curb eve-teasing cases near educational institutions such as schools and colleges, which sometimes led to communal tension in the city, the Muzaffarnagar district administration has decided to install CCTV cameras outside all schools and colleges in the city by June 30.
According to information, district magistrate Dinesh Kumar Singh has asked the district inspector of schools (DIOS) to carry out work of CCTV installation, besides directing the city magistrate to verify the work and produce the report soon.

The move comes in wake of several cases of eve-teasing being reported near schools and colleges.
In the first phase, all educational institutes will be covered, while in the later phase, CCTV cameras will be installed at public places.
The DIOS, VP Singh, told TOI, “Following the DM’s instructions, CCTVs have been installed in over two-third schools and colleges in the city, while the remaining will be covered within next week. I visited several colleges where CCTV cameras are yet to be installed. I will hold a meeting of all principals to see the progress.”
A total of 70 CCTV cameras will be put up at educational institutions, while 45 have already been installed.

The DM has instructed that after schools and colleges, all petrol pumps, banks, marriage halls and jewellery shops will also be covered under the drive. Besides, CCTVs will also be installed at all major routes in the city.
Solar lights are being installed, while high mast lighting will also be put up at all major crossings. These lights were put up at six crossings on Friday.
Earlier, on March 17, a clash had erupted over an eve-teasing incident at Naya Baans locality. This was followed by both sides pelting stones at each other. The police had to intervene to control the situation. Likewise, in October 2015, the police had also launched a ‘Majnoo Pakdo’ drive wherein more than 20 youths were caught allegedly eve-teasing near a girl’s college in a single day. Several other youths were also nabbed outside Jain Kanya Inter College.
