MEERUT: Protesting against the alleged involvement of political leaders in the death of a Dalit research scholar at the University of Hyderabad, students of Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU) on Tuesday burnt an effigy of the Prime Minister and demanded that BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya be sacked from the council of ministers.
“Not only should labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya be removed from the council of ministers but he should also be sent to jail.

Rohith Vemula was an intelligent research scholar and was punished by the university authorities only because he was a Dalit,” said Vineet Chaprana, a CCSU student. The students burnt an effigy of Narendra Modi and demanded quick action by him and other BJP functionaries.
On Monday, the Dalit student’s suicide snowballed into a major controversy after the police charged union minister Bandaru Dattatreya and four others, including the vice chancellor, with abetting the suicide. 26-year-old Rohith hung himself in a hostel room on Sunday after desperate pleas to reverse a varsity decision to expel him and four other Dalit students from the hostel and common areas failed to evoke any response.
The opposition parties had also demanded that the minister be sacked from the council of ministers. The students of CCSU reiterated their demands. “If our demands are not heard and the central government does not work in our favour, students will jam roads to protest against the matter. It is very unfair on the part of the government to have a minister like Dattatreya amidst other council of members,” said Shrikaant Chaudhary.
