MEERUT: With the arrest of three men, including a 22-yr-old Btech student, on Thursday, police claimed to have solved the
Bulandshahr
jewellery shop loot case. The three accused had allegedly looted gold chains worth Rs 20 lakh from a jewellery shop in Bulandshahr’s Khurja locality on June 4.
Following the loot conducted in broad daylight, the local business community had expressed their disappointment over security standards in the city. Subsequently, IG Meerut had directed police to crack the case at the earliest possible.
The accused, nabbed with help of CCTV footage and call location tracking -- have been identified as 22-year-old BTech student
Ankit Tewatia
, his childhood friend
Chirag Agarwal
, 21, and a 24-year-old jeweller Akshay Soni.
Tewatia
has told police that he had borrowed money from others to invest in the stock market. However, he lost his investments as the market fell. So, he hatched a plan to loot the shop to repay the debt.
SSP
Bulandshahr Shlok Kumar
said that Tewatia, a 3rd-year student in a Noida-based college lost a few lakhs in the stock market over the last two years. When his lenders started pressuring him to repay them, Tewatia along with his two aides decided to loot the jewellery shop. Police also recovered 10 gold chains and Rs 1 lakh (in cash) from the accused, added the SSP.
