Meerut: A day after Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was shot at by unidentified men in Deoband, death threats surfaced on social media, following which Amethi police on Thursday arrested a carriage-van driver, Vimlesh Singh, 30, for the alleged posts on
Facebook.
Meanwhile in Saharanpur, the car bearing a
Haryana registration number that was used by the attackers was found abandoned in a remote area.
Police in Deoband registered an FIR against unnamed men for attempted murder and under the SC/ST Act. “A few people have been detained for questioning”, said Saharanpur police.
Four days before the attack, a Facebook page titled ‘Kshatriya of Amethi’ had issued a death threat to the Dalit leader. On Wednesday evening, another post saying that Azad “would not survive the next time” was uploaded on the same page.
Though the page was later removed, it has gone viral on social media. Amethi SP
Elamaran G said that Vimlesh made the comments on Facebook as he felt “outraged and humiliated by certain remarks made by Azad”.
