MUZAFFARNAGAR: Days after a 70-year-old retired doctor and former UNICEF employee, Safdar Ali, was killed by a pack of dogs while on his morning walk inside the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus, a 30-year-old research student received multiple and serious injuries in another attack by strays.

Following this, the varsity has asked students and staff members to avoid isolated and poorly-lit areas inside the campus.

AMU's protector Waseem Ali said on Tuesday, "Khalid Hasan, a research student, sustained injuries on his limbs and was rushed to the hospital where he received multiple stitches."

Ali added said, "AMU has a huge campus spread over 5km. There are many strays living here. Students who reside in hostels and university staff are concerned about their safety now. Security guards in the campus are on alert, particularly at night."

On Saturday night, Hasan was walking alone on the football field when two dogs attacked him. More strays later joined the pack.

The student tried to get out but fell on the ground and the strays were all over him. Luckily, hearing his cries other students saved him.

AMU health officer, Zafar Abedi, said, "We are in touch with local NGOs to deal with this problem on campus. Soon, there will be several feeding centres for the dogs. We already had a meeting on this issue. A few strays will be sterilised and released in their natural habitat."

On April 16, the 70-year-old retired doctor, a resident of Medical Road in Civil Lines, was killed by strays on the AMU campus. The incident was captured on CCTV installed in the university, a video clip of which went viral on social media causing concern among the varsity staff, students and local residents.
