MEERUT: A six-year-old girl who had gone missing on February 17 was found dead beneath a heap of sugarcane in Meerut's Narangpur village under the jurisdiction of Kila Parikshitgarh police station on Thursday evening. The victim, Shivangi Singh, had bruises on her face and Rs 40 in her left hand. She had left home to buy pulses from a nearby shop and disappeared, police said.
SP (rural) Aniruddh Kumar said, "After the girl's family lodged a missing complaint, police teams, along with drone surveillance and dogs squads, swung into action and searched the nearby fields for the missing child but to no avail. Her body was discovered when some labourers removed the sugarcane stack. They then informed the police."
He added, "Prima facie, the girl was standing behind a sugarcane-laden vehicle and accidentally got buried under the cane bundles during unloading. The actual cause of death will be known after the autopsy report comes."
