MEERUT: Six men were arrested on Monday for robbing a couple in their 90s at gunpoint in Sarurpur's Harra village on the night of April 11, allegedly to raise money to buy an SUV for attending a wedding.
Police said the accused — Sameer, Ahmed, Mohd Furkan, Mohd Samil, Imran Ahmed, and Mohd Anas, all aged between 20 and 30 — looted jewellery and cash worth Rs 3 lakh.
In a bizarre twist, they sought the couple's blessings before fleeing. The victims' son, Subhash Singh, said, "My parents live alone in the village. That night, a storm caused a power cut, which the robbers exploited. Thankfully, they weren't harmed."
Ajay Shukla, SHO Sarurpur, said, "During routine questioning, the suspects panicked, thinking their fingerprints had been traced. They pressed the jeweller to sell the ornaments quickly. The jeweller, worried, confided in someone who tipped us off. That led us to them."
Police recovered a country-made pistol and the stolen items.
